CBS finally notices. I dislike the rather flip headline but folks....pay attention.

It's too early to say for sure, but a new study adds to the growing body of evidence linking a deficiency of the "sunshine vitamin" to colorectal cancer as well as multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes, and rheumatoid arthritis.

That's big news, as up to a billion people around the world are believed to have a vitamin D deficiency - including up half of adults and children in the U.S.

It is estimated that one billion people worldwide do not have sufficient vitamin D. This deficiency is thought to be largely due to insufficient exposure to the sun and in some cases to poor diet. As well as being a well-known risk factor for rickets, there is a growing body of evidence that vitamin D deficiency also increases an individual's susceptibility to autoimmune conditions such as multiple sclerosis (MS), rheumatoid arthritis and type 1 diabetes, as well as certain cancers and even dementia. Vitamin D may regulate allergic responses

Individuals who regularly have strong allergic reactions to things like mold may want to consider seeking a vitamin D tests, as a new study from researchers at Louisiana State University found that the nutrient can reduce the symptoms of mold allergies that are known to complicate asthma and cystic fibrosis.
